3616 – 3624 Magazine Street

In September 2019, Mayer Building Company completed full renovations for both buildings at 3616 Magazine & 3624 Magazine inside & out at all residential spaces, additions, and exterior new construction and rehabilitations.  We white-boxed the three commercial areas that storefront on Magazine for quick and easy build outs for the tenants that have already moved in. The building at 3616-3618 project included historic tax credits and was overhauled to proper commercial building code for mixed use occupancy. At 3624-26 we installed all new systems for “bringing it up to code” inclusive of a new fire sprinkler handicap ramp and custom metal hand/guard rails with finishes an applications that do not detract from this notable building’s presence on the famous corridor. The old crummy, residences are no more and new, spiffy apartments are in place. The new work though isn’t simple mindless re-iterations of contemporary design. While the new work incorporates the new, clean look attractive to modern renters or buyers, it also comprises (and embraces) many salvage elements restored to beauty and functionality. We saved and re-installed old cypress doors and iron rim locks, antique floors and panels, brick and stucco chimneys, and most fun: wood balconies and rails. As the aging stock on Magazine Street continually gets redeveloped and repaired, there is a dwindling and finite number of historic and interesting properties that require these types of renovations. We are very happy to have been a part of this one. It is satisfying work. Photos by Fred Goodrow Sr.
