French Truck Coffee

During the spring of 2017, Mayer Building Company completed the new French Truck Coffee on Chartres Street early. The project was designed by Colectivo. This full build out of a white box space included all new M/E/P systems and fire alarm and sprinkler modifications. The sharp, contemporary finishes include concrete tile, bold ceramics, custom steel trim and shelving and the largest butcher block surface we’ve seen in 20 plus years. The cafe sports high-end coffee making and water filtration systems for making specialty coffee (by owner), an open sales and cafe floor, new stainless equipment for back-of-house and restrooms. The architect’s plan included “bringing the sidewalk into the space,” a terrific detail by which we inlaid a New Hampshire bluestone into a portion of the French Truck space interlaced with the adjoining municipal sidewalk.(Progress photos by MBC staff, finish photos by Todd Price, Nola.com).

Small Renovations / Improvements

Mayer Building Company completed a number of small projects recently. We completed a termite repairs and window replacement in an old building on Royal Street. We replicated an HDLC protected wood rail at a roof deck gallery on a manor house in the Lower Garden District. We built a new gallery over looking St. Charles Avenue on an underused front facade Uptown on the Streetcar line. Here’s a quote from one of the owners, “I wanted everyone to know that the floor replacement work done by Ryan’s crew is amazing! Ryan, I can’t thank you enough for your attention to detail when replacing and refinishing the floor boards. It is literally impossible to distinguish the old wood from the new.
GREAT JOB!!!”

French Quarter Preventative Maintenance

Through the spring and summer, Mayer Building Company performed work for various French Quarter property owners and landlords. These small projects, not renovations or overhauls, were performed with a view to preventative maintenance. Though its hard to see in photographs, Mayer Building Company repaired, cleaned-up, replaced and freshened a myriad of exterior elements to a handful of historic buildings. We replaced wood rot, corrected gutters, re-hung shutters, patched louvers and deckboards, scraped and painted iron, trim, stucco. We re-pointed crumbling mortar with the VCC mortar mix, corrected flashings, re-set slate roof tiles and terra cotta ridge caps, tidied up systems lines like wiring and conduits and replaced glass and glazing putty. Though these items do not stand-out like full renovations would in the old French Quarter, they are extremely important nonetheless. Combined, items like these add life to the aging structures, protect them from exponential deterioration, keep buildings in compliance with the historic society and certainly improve the value of the buildings.

Baton Rouge Flood Rehabilitation

After the historic Baton Rouge flood, MBC was pleased to help a family member rebuild his home. We were able to quickly gut and demolish the flood damaged parts of the home. When it came time to rebuild, we worked with the homeowner who performed much of the rebuilding himself. We secured a design by Holly Baker for putting the pieces back together. We installed doors and trim and cabinets and a new ceiling and lights in the kitchen. We installed new windows and siding in select areas. We installed tile and grout. We gave discounts and tried our best to provide clear correspondence and a listening ear. We tried to give our best guidance and shared opinions. I mention these last items because, in a way, it is typical of what we do as a great general contractor, but given the sensitive nature of the project (i.e. the client was not planning a renovation); it also made me realize that I have work to do on those very things. Listening and understanding the client’s concerns are really the utmost best thing a good contractor ought to do. I know this family is pleased to be back in their home after such a devastating event, and I’m glad we could help them get there. I’m also glad for the reminder to try to walk in someone else’s shoes.
